At a glance

  • Beautiful 17th-century cottage with character features and modern styling
  • Well-placed to explore the varied landscapes of two National Parks and two AONBs
  • In an idyllic village location with the bustling town of Kirkby Lonsdale only 3 miles away
Property code: OC-SZ527

Despite the property’s rural location in the charming village of Barbon, with its famous village shop, you’re still only 3 miles from the market town of Kirkby Lonsdale. Here, food and history lovers will be spoilt for choice as there are delis, a weekly market and a choice of eateries all nestled amongst the town’s historic, cobbled streets and squares. Walking/cycling trails from your doorstep allow you to explore the area’s fells, dales, rivers, woods and more. You’re close to where Cumbria, Lancashire and Yorkshire meet, as well as 14 miles from Kendal, the gateway to the Lake District, and the largest lake, Windermere, just beyond that with lakeside walks, boat trips and other water-based activities available.

A self-contained wing of a Georgian house, set on a working farm, some parts of this stone cottage date back to the 17th century, but you can rest assured that it has been beautifully renovated to ensure the modern visitor has a comfortable stay. High vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and natural tones make it feel light, airy and spacious throughout; it is the perfect place to unwind at the end of a busy day exploring. After parking on the gravel driveway, head up the five steps to the front door. On entering, you’ll find yourself in the kitchen/diner, which is well-equipped with everything you’ll need, including an electric oven and hob, fridge/freezer, microwave and dishwasher. There is ample room around the table whether you’re dining, playing a game or planning the next day’s adventure. Stepping down two steps, you arrive in the lounge, which is very spacious and has a range of seats to suit your preferences alongside a TV. The king-size bedroom is also on the ground floor and is just as bright and charming as the living area, with neutral tones making it easy to relax. Completing the accommodation is a good-size, contemporary bathroom with a shower over the bath.

Outside, there is a lovely seating area where you can enjoy a morning coffee or an evening glass of wine. You could even enjoy a spot of al fresco dining against the backdrop of the peaceful countryside. There is parking for two cars and bike storage is available.

Unfortunately, not one of the best cottages we have stayed in (and we have stayed in quite a few). There was no local information at hand (i.e.Doctors,chemist,hospital,vets eating venues, etc). Very limited food cupboard space as well as limited space in the bedroom for hanging clothes,(hooks on one wall}. The Bath/Shower could benefit from a slipRead more mat and grab rail (especially for the elderly,as ourselves). The 'scenic' views from the windows consisted of either a rooftop from one,or bushes and trees from the others. On the plus side, the bed was comfortable, the lounge acceptable, with plenty of games and reading material. Sorry, but not value for cost of the week. Hide

Lovely old building and lovely location. Nice secure driveway/front garden which meant the dogs could be allowed to wander around. A great start point from which to explore the county.

We had a lovely stay in this compact, traditionally styled cottage. It was warm and comfortable and provided good facilities for two people in January.

This is a lovely cottage. The bed was very comfy! It is in a perfect location. There are walks from the door and it is an easy drive in to the Lakes. It is a short walk to the local pub where the locals are very friendly. A relaxing stay in a fantastic location.

Great cottage for a few days away with the dogs. Plenty of nearby walks and if you drive for 30 minutes you're at the coast or stunning waterfalls. The nearby pub was great for drinks and homemade food, and very dog friendly too. We'll certainly be back here again in the future

A lovely little spot to stay in, every thing you need, easy to find and great access to some fabulous countryside. The wash house is clean and comfortable, a good size kitchen, a large sitting room, and a comfortable bed. The shower/bath had plenty of hot water at all times. The enclosed courtyard was perfect for our dog to roam and play in safely.

Very quiet spot, with easy access to Kirkby Lonsdale, Sedbergh, really lovely parts of the Dales and Cumbria. Enjoyed being here in November as cosy, with a very comfortable bed. If travelling with a dog in summer months would personally prefer a cottage with an enclosed garden

A cosy comfortable cottage with all required for a relaxing holiday.. The local Barbon Inn welcomed my dog and myself and was a pleasant short walk from the cottage. The village shop cum cafe was closed which seems to be permanent. Kirkby Lonsdale, a four mile drive, is a charming, dog friendly town with a park by the river for dog runs.

Excellent reading section. As an avid student of Art History and History I was thrilled to find the collection of books, catalogues, magazines etc. Very spacious cottage and very comfortable throughout. Excellent starting point to visit the Lakes, Dales and Pennines.
