Set within tranquil Mid Devon countryside, this unique eco-cottage offers a memorable escape for two with countryside swimming and wildlife on the doorstep. Guests staying here are just a short drive from several of Devon’s gems: the historic town of Tiverton (around 6 miles away) with its ancient castle and riverside canal walks, the Gothic Victorian manor and gardens of Knightshayes Court (8 miles) with woodland walks and elegant parkland gardens, and the pretty village of Bampton (7 miles) with its quaint streets and local charm. For those drawn to wild landscapes, Exmoor National Park is within easy reach (about 18 miles), offering rugged moorland and scenic walking routes with an abundance of wildlife from wild cattle to pretty chirping birds to set you off on route.

Inside, the cottage has been thoughtfully created with craftsmanship and comfort in mind, blending rustic textures with modern touches. The open-plan living space features a cobbled floor, timber beams and a cosy wood-burner, perfect for relaxing evenings in. A bespoke fitted kitchen provides everything needed for simple holiday cooking, including a breakfast bar, while the adjoining shower room offers a contemporary finish. A handcrafted ladder staircase leads to the mezzanine bedroom, where a luxurious super-king-size bed and freestanding roll-top bath create a wonderfully indulgent retreat. A carved wooden screen reclaimed from a local church adds character, while subtle markings in the cob walls tell stories of the building’s past.

The private courtyard is a real highlight, offering a beautifully sheltered spot for outdoor living. Fire up the wood-fired pizza oven, make use of the Kamado-style ceramic smoker or enjoy relaxed meals at the outdoor seating area. A gate leads directly from the courtyard to a meadow beside the river — a peaceful natural space where you might spot kingfishers darting along the water or, with luck, catch sight of an otter. Surrounded by wildlife, sustainable farming and a genuine sense of seclusion, this charming hideaway offers couples the perfect balance of adventure, comfort and countryside calm.

Only to be mindful of te steps into the mezzanine, the rest of the accommodation was cleverly constructed and was private with pretty special view. We would return again.

We had the best time at Swallows Nest, Mr and Mrs Bunning were so welcoming upon our stay and provided us with everything we needed for the weekend. The scones, cream and jam were such a generous touch. The cottage was so homely and the wood fire made it that much more comfortable. We also loved exploring your farm and land. Thank you for making ouRead morer weekend away so lovely and special, we will definitely be returning! Hide
