  • Wander from your door through shared woodland or down to the banks of the River Eden
Property code: OC-SZ176

Tucked between the villages of Lazonby (2.5 miles) and Langwathby (4.5 miles), enjoy your peaceful setting in the Eden Valley. Walk from your door to Lacy’s Caves, where you will find five chambers carved into the sandstone cliffs less than half a mile from home. Continue on to Long Meg and her Daughters and make it a loop by adding in a visit to the village of Little Salkeld, the route is 4.5 miles long and great for a gentle walk. A 12.5-mile journey will take you to the northern tip of Ullswater, a beautiful body of water where you can make a splash and hire boats or enjoy a leisurely cruise on an Ullswater Steamer.

Make your way inside this quaint, single-storey home and begin your escape to the Lake District. Built as a gatehouse in 1900, this bolthole exudes character and charm and is a welcoming place to call home. The open-plan living space is light, bright and airy, yet cosy thanks to the wood burner which throws heat into the space. Lose yourself in a good book or switch on the TV/DVD for a romantic film night. Find all you need to rustle up delicious snacks and feasts from dawn ‘til dusk in the kitchen area with an electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, toaster, kettle, dishwasher and washing machine. This bright space invites you to cook up a storm and throw together tasty picnics to help fuel your adventures. Dine together at the table and pop open a bottle or two for date nights in this lovely home. When it’s time to get snug and head to bed, the double bedroom is a wonderful place to rest. Decorated in neutral tones with pretty patterns scattered throughout, admire the ornamental fireplace and the views from the bay window. Rise and shine and start your day with a soak in the bath or a rinse in the shower over the bath before getting ready for the day. The bathroom also has a WC.

Take a brew outside to the patio which is reached via French doors in the living space. Bask in the morning sun and gaze out over the partially enclosed lawn - a great space to spend time in on balmy evenings after your adventures. A BBQ is perfect for sizzling feasts teamed with sundowner aperitifs, and you can stroll the shared natural woodland which leads you down to the banks of the River Eden for a stroll close to home. There is off-road parking for one car.

Guests have access to a private section of the beautiful River Eden, a quarter of a mile’s walk from the front door – you might recognise this section of river from the BBC's 'Gone Fishing Christmas Special' (2021) with Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse

The cottage is lovely and really cosy with the woodburner lit. Everything you need in the kitchen and a comfy bed. Look out of the windows at night and there's barely a light to be seen, so peaceful. Our only complaint is the walk down by the river. According to the visitor's book the directions for the route are no longer valid and there is no upRead moredated route. We were looking forward to it but not wanting a confrontation with the land owner we gave it a miss sadly. I put 4 stars for comfort as we found it very cold without the log burner lit but it was around freezing temperatures overnight. Owner kindly provided one bag of logs and we bought another one. Take some matches and firelighters too. Must be absolutely idyllic in summer. Hide

A beautiful little cottage offering a quiet retreat in a well named valley. Local walks are excellent and there are a good selection of pubs to eat in. The lane was busier than suggested so be prepared to reverse a lot! Avoid Penrith if you can.

Great place to stay! Quiet and restful. If you do stay beware of closeness of farm field to parking place. My car was covered in soil after farmer harrowed field. Also - if the farmer does harrow the field in dry weather forget about sitting in the garden with a G & T!

Nice comfortable property with good level of equipment and in a superb location. Unfortunately the heating system in the property is completely inadequate. The mornings in particular were very cold and this marred an otherwise pleasurable stay.

Beautiful views from the cottage, this included very dark sky at night, perfect to see aurora borealis. The cottage was warm and cosy a real home from home. Walks through the woods down to the river on the estate were superb. Peaceful holiday in a great location to see Hadrians Wall, Tarn Hows lake walk and Aira force waterfall and woodland walk. WRead moree also found a wonderful local pub with lovely staff and great food called The Shepherds Inn at Langwathby. Hide
